BYRON ON: CONSISTENCY

Consistency is key. 

Chances are, each of you who are reading this post, have made a number of New Years Resolutions a few months back. There’s an even higher chance that most of you have already broken them already. 

But, why? I don’t mean to be discouraging. We begin each year, each week, and each day with great intentions, great resolutions, and big dreams and aspirations for the future. And we know that these great things we have before us can only be achieved through proper goal setting and hard work. So, the question remains: why don’t we keep our resolutions? 

It seems there is one word that doesn’t seem to lack in our vocabulary, but in our habits: consistency.

What has consistency accomplished? 

You’ve heard the common phrase “Rome wasn’t built in a day.” That phrase is typically used to tell someone to slow down and take it one step at a time, but, it also teaches a good lesson about consistency. Rome was built through steady, deliberate work that continued on through years and years of consistent development. 


If you look at anyone who has done anything at a professional level, and take a look back into their work ethic throughout their lives, you will find a pattern of consistency that adds up to 10,000+ hours of dedicated practice time. There are thousands of examples of this, but we’ll look at Steph Curry of the Golden State Warriors. 

You may not know who Steph Curry is, but you should go to YouTube and check out his highlight reel. He has been an undersized point guard his entire life (a basketball equivalent to Lionel Messi), underrated all through high school and college, and has somehow turned into the most prolific three-point shooter in the NBA’s history.

However, his success was not an accident, it was a choice. He chose to work harder, more creatively, and longer than any of his peers. Even from a young age he was relentless. At a invitation-only camp, Steph was noticed by a trainer in the NBA. 30 minutes before each workout, when other players were getting ready, Steph had already worked up a sweat, and made more than 100 shots. He said he knew he was going to be an enormous success one day because the habits Steph Curry had then were on par with the dreams he hoped to accomplish today. Are we the same way?

How do we develop consistency? 

Consistency is largely habitual. So, developing this habit can take time and effort. Here are some tips that will help you be a little more consistent. 

    • Set new goals and review old goals weekly. Ensure that they are attainable, measurable, and improvable. 
    • Rid yourself of all negative thinking. This hinders consistency as it weakens your resolve. 
    • Be more critical of yourself. This will help you recognize what you lack, and therefore allow you to push forward with a more honesty-driven approach
    • Have someone else act as your steward, meaning you are accountable to them for the things that you did during the week. 

 As you apply these principles to your life, you will see an increased ability to attain your goals, make your dreams a reality, and find out who you really are. This will, in turn, allow you to set even higher goals, and dream even bigger. Next New Year, no new resolutions will have to be made. Instead, you’ll be making New Year improvements.
